Hello all, in starting off the joust a previously unseen ambiguity was found in the Tourney Knight benefit (page 90 of the rulebook): "Add a number equal to the bonus dice you assigned to Tournaments to your Fighting test results when jousting. You also add this number to your passive Animal Handling result to stay in the saddle." The key points are in bold. Animal Handling is used two ways in jousting: - Passive Animal Handling is used as the target number for fighting tests.
- An active Animal Handling test is made to stay in the saddle when struck.
The question is: which of these two should the benefit apply to?

Developers answered that question on the forums.
It applies to passive animal handling, not active stay in saddle.

If that's the case then that's how it is.

I haven't read the developers' response, but it seems to me that the issue arises only when reading too much into the phrase "stay in the saddle". The benefit clearly states that it is applied to the passive Animal Handling result, and nothing else. "Stay in the saddle" is a pefectly valid description of what the passive Animal Handling result does for you - don't get hit, and you won't risk being unhorsed.
To interpret Tourney Knight as adding its bonus to the Animal Handling test to prevent being unhorsed, you would have to believe that the description of Tourney Knight is either erroneous as written and should instead read "add this number to your Animal Handling test to stay in the saddle", or that it omits part of the effect, and should read "add this number to your passive Animal Handling result as well as your Animal Handling test to stay in the saddle when hit". This seems a far greater stretch than just seeing the "stay in the saddle" part as a bit of fluff.

Thanks guys. I think I remember the post Ayleth refers too, but Green Ronin's legacy boards are down now sadly.
I'll keep playing it as adding to Passive ride then, as it seems like we're all in agreement.
